The truth about IPL Hair Reduction Treatments ~ you get what you pay for!

A recent client story, Realskin Clinic had a male client, Dave, visit the clinic for IPL hair reduction treatment, full chest and abdomen. The charge was $500, when Dave asked why the cost is so much, it was explained that ‘we provide a meticulous service’. Four weeks later Dave returned for his follow-up treatment with little to no hair regrowth (yay us, amazing results).

The same evening following Dave’s second visit, another male client, Tom, booked for the same service. Tom had an IPL treatment 4 weeks ago at an unnamed clinic here in Queensland. The hair regrowth was a patchy mess (pictured, right). Sadly, the only way to improve Tom’s visible patchiness was to ‘patch treat’ him to catch up the missed hairs. Unfortunately, this process will cost Tom more money and more time to achieve an even hair reduction.

Recently our director Sevine Forster found herself in a discussion with a client about IPL hair reduction treatments and made the statement, ‘With regards to IPL, we are expensive and for good reason.’

The clients’ response was, ‘No, you are not expensive. You are adequately priced. It’s just that everywhere else is offering average and charging cheap for it.’

This conversation left Sevine confident with what she has always believed to be the truth within the IPL industry; ‘you get what you pay for.’

Have you heard of ‘shot allocation’?

IPL shot allocation means that some IPL treatments may allocate a specific amount of shots (zaps) per area. For instance, the underarms maybe allocated 14 shots, 7 for each underarm. Meaning despite the size of your treated area, you will only be treated with the specified amount of shots, potentially impinging on your results. Hence, some treatments can be offered cheaper because you get less treatment. At Realskin Clinic, ‘shot application’ is not used. If there is hair in the area to be treated, they will be zapped, with no hair left untreated.

Are you sick of paying cheap for IPL hair reduction that simply doesn’t work?

Or are you receiving patchy results?

Why are you doing 11-15 treatments, when your friend is doing 6-8 and getting the same, (if not better) results?

What would you do if your GP told you that you needed to have knee surgery? Would you;

A) Start phoning around, price shopping and pick the cheapest?

B) Assume since a company mostly markets surgery that they must be good – (in a situation where many clinicians offer the treatment – think about who would be preforming this treatment and how would it be supervised. For example, would you want your GP to perform your knee surgery or the orthopedic surgeon)?

C) Or, choose a smaller specialist team with years of experience, where only 1-2 clinicians would preform your treatment?

When deciding which company to have your IPL hair reduction treatment with, here are a few things to consider.

Firstly, you will need an initial IPL consultation and test patch. A test patch must be conducted on a separate day to the actual treatment appointment. In addition, an IPL test patch allows a little time for your skin to response and ensures this is a safe treatment choice for you.

Being aware of how many treatments you require is imperative to managing your expectations. At an IPL consultation your technician will establish a realistic treatment plan.

For you to achieve optimal results from your treatment plan, you need to start using the prescribed pre treatment homecare to prepare your skin for the heat and light therapy.

During the test patch, an IPL ‘end point’ will establish a setting especially for you! This is a customised setting to suit your Fitzpatrick skin type (skin colour), hair colour and hair density (thickness); IPL is not a one size fits all.

If an IPL end point is not established especially for you, it is likely that you are not being treated with the settings you require for the best result. Which could mean needing more treatments, therefore, more cost and more time.

When deciding which company is best for you to book your IPL treatment plan, consider the relationship you have with your IPL technician.

Word of mouth is always a safe bet. When phoning around, do not price shop, or go for the cheapest offer. Look for value and the quality of information. After all IPL is a paramedical treatment. Ensure you feel comfortable, entrusting your service with a company that offers a professional IPL procedure and a valued service.

The bottom line is, when is comes to IPL hair reduction treatments – you get what you pay for!

3 Skin Needling Myths ~ BUSTED!

#1. It sounds like it will hurt.  There are many types of devices on the market for skin needling, at Realskin Clinic we choose to use the latest technology from the USA, MDerma. We prepare the skin by first cleaning it and then applying a topical anaesthetic for 30 minutes, this is removed before the treatment begins, we use a gliding agent Serum Paradox on the skin that allows the MDerma to move over the skin freely without dragging on the skin and at the same time feeding your skin. The tiny needles move up and down so quickly that you only feel a light vibration, it’s like a massage, it’s relaxing and painless.

#2. What about the risk of contamination. Many of the skin needling technologies available are one time use only. With each MDerma skin needling treatment, a brand new MDerma tip is used, this new technology only allows for the tip to be used once, the design of the tip prevents any cosmeceutical or serum from going up and in to the back of the tip and like other technologies where you adjust the depth of the needle by turning the device, with the MDerma the depth of the needles is adjusted by turning the tip and not the device, this eliminates contamination even further, this is a huge advancement on safety from other technologies.

#3. I have seen and heard some disaster stories of scratch marks and blood. Competed training with any medical device and certification are essential. Every skin type tells a different story and is treated this way when we skin needle. We look for the clinical end points we have been trained in when skin needling, like, erythema (redness on the skin) and pin point bleeding are visible to us during the treatment. With the MDerma downtime has decreased significantly, some mild inflammation and redness can be visible for a day or 2, however wearing mineral make up the next day allows for you to hide any visible signs of the treatment. The results on the skin once the course of 4-6 treatments has been completed are, tighter, brighter, dewy new skin. The tone texture of the skin takes on a new life, fine lines, wrinkles, scars decrease over time, crepy skin becomes tighter, pigmentation fades. Skin needling can be done annually 6 weeks before each birthday to keep your skin in the best skin health it can be.

Sevine’s top tips for pushing the boundaries

Sevine Uni

Last week our Director, Sevine Forster, had the pleasure of attending the University of the Sunshine Coast’s 20th Year Anniversary and Unveiling of the Graduate Walk.

It’s no Hollywood star (yet) but Sevine’s name was set in stone at the University where she completed a degree in Biomedical Science back in 2010. Being a first generation graduate, this event was a real honour for Sevine to reflect on just how far she has come in her career.

In the short time of 14 years, Sevine has graduated from 3 Beauty Therapy Diplomas, worked on Mayfair, London for 2 years, attained a Bachelors in Biomedical Science and for the past 5 years has been successfully managing her own business, Realskin Clinic based on Racecourse Road, Brisbane.

Sevine says her success is due to, “My burning desire for more knowledge, focus and hard work.” She has applied all the knowledge and experiences from these milestones to structure her business model in a way that embraces her highest values. Her mission with her business is to provide a personalised service, with realistic and honest advice for her clients’ skin needs. Her professional understanding means that her team will listen to their clients carefully, and always deliver the best solution without confusing jargon.

Reflecting on her High School days, Sevine never imagined she would have achieved so much from her career in such a short time. She explains how she was always a high achiever but needed to discover her true passion before she could apply her drive. From her years of study, it became apparent that her passion for skin and helping her clients achieve their skin goals would be what she does best.

Sevine’s top tips for pushing the boundaries are to stay focused (have an open mind, be flexible and adaptive to new experiences and ideas), support yourself (even when you think no one can support you, learn to support yourself), hard work (do what it takes) and be grateful (have a gratitude attitude, and you will always win). This is your journey, it’s as unique as your finger print, enjoy the path.

Flourless Chocolate Cake

FSchoccakeSunday is a great day to prep meals and healthy snacks for the week ahead. While the hubby napped today I whipped up this cake in about 30 minutes. This baby is loaded with Vitamins and antioxidants, that combined with no added sugar or flour makes this cake pretty amazing.

Hope you love it as much as I do.

Ingredients

1 ½ cup packed almond meal

½ cup coco powder

½ teaspoon baking soda

Pinch salt

1 ½ cup packed pitted dates

½ cup water

3 eggs

2 Tablespoons coconut oil

2 teaspoons vanilla

Method

  1. Preheat oven to 163º.
  2. Mix together all dry ingredients (almond meal, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt) in a bowl and set aside.
  3. Place dates and water in a food processor or strong blender and blend until it forms a smooth paste.
  4. Mix the date paste with the wet ingredients (eggs, coconut oil, vanilla), and mix until smooth.
  5. Add the wet to the dry and stir until smooth.
  6. Grease an 8” round cake pan, and pour in batter.
  7. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean. Let cool for at least 10-15 minutes before serving so that it has time to set.
  8. Serve plain or with fresh fruit and/or whipped cream. May also be served chilled from the fridge.

Health Benefits:

  • Almonds: Almonds are a major superfood, and they are full on monounsaturated, good-for-you fats, and regulate cholesterol. It contains many nutrients that benefit the brain, and regulate cholesterol. The monounsaturated fates and vitamin E reduce the risk of heart disease.
  • Chocolate: Chocolate makes us feel good; by stimulating endorphin production (the “feel-good’ chemicals). Contains serotonin, which is an anti-depressant. And it makes our skin smooth and soft because of the healthy fats; oleic acid – a healthy monounsaturated fat found also in olive oil and stearic acid – saturated fat that has a neutralizing effect on cholesterol.
  • Dates: A laxative food with high-fibre content, so it can help those suffering from constipation. They are digested quite easily and are great for when you need quick energy. Also, regular consumption of dates has been found to help the growth of friendly bacteria in the intestines.
  • Coconut Oil: Coconut is widely misunderstood because of its high fat content; however, coconut’s saturated fat and is made up of medium-chain fatty acids. These medium-chains are easy to absorb and digest, and are converted quickly into energy. This means that the body is less likely to store the medium-chain as fat. It is also great for healthy skin and hair.

This Australia Day choose to be sun smart

australiadaysun

In today’s blog we will help you understand why it is important to use a non salon brand vs. professional salon sunscreen brand.

Sun smart – Non salon brands vs. Professional Salon SPF

All sunscreens contain ‘chemicals’. When we refer to the words ‘chemicals’ we automatically start to think, nasty. However the actual definition of the word chemical refers to, “Everything which has mass is a chemical. Any liquid, solid or gas.” (Reference; About Education, 2014, Anne Marie Helmenstine Ph.D.)

Most ‘chemicals’ that are found in sunscreens are naturally occurring in nature, such as plants or wood for example. The difference between non salon and chemist brands compared to professional salon brands are these two simple things.

1 – Non salon brands tend to use cheaper ingredients and a lot of different ingredients. Whereas, with professional salon brands, yes, you pay more and for good reason, the ingredients are better quality and contain more of these ingredients which better absorb UVA and UVB rays. Therefore professional salon brands contain a higher concentrate of quality ingredients. Why would you want to eat fridge leftover fritters with loads of ingredients when you could eat one big juicy steak with a side of broccoli?

2 – Professional salon brands contain more ingredients that benefit and feed your skin. For instance, professional salon sunscreens work as an extension to your skincare. Skin benefiting ingredients such as, vitamin C and antioxidants to improve your skin health; would you really run 5km and then eat a pack of donuts? You could but it would be counterproductive, just as applying cheap plant ingredients with no skin health benefits to your skin after caring for it with other professional skincare products and treatments.

This Australia Day choose to be sun smart, your skin deserves it!

Here are the sunscreens we have at Realskin Clinic

Ultraceuticals SunActive 50+ Face Cream, 60ml, $49
Ultraceuticals SunActive 50+ Body Lotion, 130ml, $49
Ultraceuticals SunActive 50+ Clear Body Spray, 180ml, $59

chemical peel, microdermabrasion, treat wrinkles

Chemical peel vs Microdermabrasion For Winkle – How should you fight them?

Many people assume that chemical peels and microdermabrasion are the same skin care treatment. They are both thought of as resurfacing techniques that exfoliate your skin. Within less than an hour treatment both will have an effect on your wrinkles.

The way the procedures differ and the substances they use are very different though. Since they remove multiple layers of skin, using one too soon after the other can result in serious damage. A professional knows how long a client should wait. They also know which procedure will work best for each client’s specific needs. Treatments can be preformed – for an intense program can be preformed bi-weekly or for more maintenance programs monthly if suffice.

How Microdermabrasion Works

Microdermabrasion is the less invasive of the two procedures. It is actually considered a mechanical exfoliation instead of a chemical one. It, like a chemical peel, can be done with over the counter product however, these are usually less effective. For more reliable results you should go to a professional. Store bought microdermabrasion kits have little effect on your skin compared to salon therapies.

To do a microdermabrasion, the therapist will take a special tool shaped like a wand with a suction, and work the wand in a criss-cross pattern over your skin. The wand has a diamond tip to it. It shoots sterile aluminum oxide out at high velocity so that it tears through your skin. These microscopic crystals are then vacuumed up with the same wand along with dead and damaged skin cells.

To do a microdermabrasion, the therapist will take a special tool shaped like a wand with a suction, and work the wand in a criss-cross pattern over your skin.

How Chemical Peels Work

The biggest difference between a chemical peel and a microdermabrasion is less stimulation on the skin. The second largest difference is that its potency is variable. You can choose a mild peel or an extreme one to fit your exact skin repair needs.

The fruit acid or professional peel you choose is applied to your face and left alone to do its work. The substances digest the superficial deer skin layers. This leaves your skin – smooth, refined, hydrated and ready to rebuild.

chemical peel, microdermabrasion, treat wrinkles

Chemical peels reach deeper layers of skin than microdermabrasions.

The Pros of Microdermabrasion

The recovery time from a microdermabrasion is a maximum of a few days. Most people only need a few hours.

There is almost no pain. You will experience a(gentle vacuum suction sensation and that is. Side effects are rare and usually only occur when the pressure of the wand is raised unnesscessarily.

Microdermabrasions take a few sessions to achieve optimal results. You will notice a change in your skin immediately but for full repair you should return bi weekly for 6 to 12 weeks.
The Pros of a Chemical Peel

Chemical peels reach deeper layers of skin than microdermabrasions. This means they come with a little more risk but that they are able to handle more difficult wrinkles.

A chemical peel can be preformed from a selection of peel, the peel type is dependent of your skin conditions and goals, some peels are more mild than others. This gives you a bit of wiggle room when it comes to how invasive the procedure is. An enzyme peel can be light on your skin while an AHA peel can work right down in the deep layers of your skin.

So Which One Should You Choose?

It really depends on what stage your wrinkles are at. Microdermabrasions work best when your skin is just starting to loose it’s support. While deep set wrinkles need a stronger solution. Chemical peels are tough on wrinkles however, the recovery time associated with some of the more intense peels needs to be considered. Discuss your options with a professional for a personalised skin journey program to be designed especially for you.

Waxing Brisbane – Beauty Treatments

Gone are the days when pain justifies the gain of beauty. A variety of treatments and products are now available for everybody. No matter where you are in Brisbane, you can find the best beauty and skin treatments for you at Realskin Clinic.

The Benefits of Getting Skin Treatments Such as Waxing Brisbane

Beauty Esthetics is the process of applying different treatments to the skin to preserve its health and natural glow. There are many reasons why people, primarily females, visit skin clinics but the most typical is to achieve a youthful and healthy complexion. Some of the treatments you may have in mind are waxing Brisbane, facials Brisbane, IPL Brisbane, and laser hair removal Brisbane, all at the convenient day spa Brisbane location.

Waxing Brisbane

Waxing means removing unwanted hair at the root. You might choose any of the two types of waxing Brisbane: soft and hard. Soft Waxing Brisbane is used primarily on larger areas of the body like the back, chest or legs. On the other hand, Hard Waxing Brisbane is excellent for the underarm, bikini, or facial area because the process is less irritating especially to sensitive skin.

Facials Brisbane

Facials Brisbane is the one of the most common treatments performed by your specialist. We gain a good understanding of your skin before deciding on what the best Brisbane facial treatment is for you. There are many available facials Brisbane treatment to suit your needs such as clinical facials and skin health facials.

Day Spa Brisbane

Our clients visit our day spa Brisbane for both physical and mental health benefits. Some believe that the frequency of visiting day spa Brisbane correlates with fewer sick days, better quality of sleep, and all in all better health. Day spa Brisbane treatments are your quick and affordable means to alleviate stress and enjoy a relaxing atmosphere outside the daily grinds of life.

IPL Brisbane

Intense Pulsed Light or IPL Brisbane is a light therapy and uses a spectrum of pulsed light energy. The body absorbs the light and heats the dark hair, which then destroys and damages the potential for regrowth of your hair follicle. IPL Brisbane is one of the most advanced methods in hair removal, different from laser hair removal Brisbane. Your IPL Brisbane treatments will depend on your hair and skin colour.

Laser Hair Removal Brisbane

Unlike IPL Brisbane, Laser Hair Removal Brisbane uses a cosmetic laser which fires a concentrated beam of light primarily directed at the pigment of your hair follicles. Laser Hair Removal Brisbane treatment kills your hair follicle at its root, precluding them to grow back. Get silky smooth skin today and book your next laser hair removal Brisbane treatment today!

No matter what your skin needs are, we at Realskin Clinic set realistic goals and achieve real results for you. We provide the highest quality of tailored treatments for all skin types.

Ultraceutical’s Ultra Clear Range

Madison’s Beauty, led by owner Sevine Foster, has always been a provider of the latest and greatest aesthetic technologies. The Ultraceutical brand attacks acne in every form of development instead of just one. Science shows that acne goes through many cycles. If not all of these are treated, your pores can still become infected. Ultraceutical’s Ultra Clear Range decongests your skin, soothes inflammation, and reduces the odds of future breakouts.

Ultraceuticals were created by Dr. Geoffery Heber so they are medical grade. They are also Australian made. We love supporting our country by using domestic goods. It is a product we can be proud of.

Our APAN Endorsement

The Aesthetics Practitioners Advisory Network is a community of learning for business owners, educators, and inspired employees. If you are in the beauty or aesthetics industry you should have a subscription. Their newsletter, APJ, is considered the educational authority on all industry related technologies and treatments. When science discovers a new technique, APAN features it. If a salon owner shows integrity or promise, APJ shares that person’s knowledge with the rest of us.

Sevine Foster, owner of Madison’s Beauty, joined APAN in order to keep herself and her salon current as far as treatments go. She wants the best for her clients. Sevine read the editorials in APJ to be inspired by other salon owners like her.

Now, APJ has chosen her to inspire others.

Sevine’s interview centered around her three core values:

  • Commit to preserving the natural beauty of skin
  • Hire the most sophisticate and knowledgeable therapists available
  • Always deliver the highest level of service

From the very beginning of her successful career, Sevine has been hands on. She is passionate about science and the ways that advanced learning can help her clients. Passion is the fuel behind each of her core values. It is the reason she got into this industry. Sevine loves the job.

The Benefits of Diamond Microdermabrasion

We all want to look and feel our best. Over time, it is natural for our youthful appearance to fade. There is a new and innovative way to regain your budding presentation using a unique facial treatment effective for nearly any skin type known as microdermabrasion.

What is Diamond Microdermabrasion Treatment?

Diamond microdermabrasion is one of the easiest and most effective ways to fight the effects of aging. With the use of high-tech skin care products, specialists are able to penetrate deep into the skin, allowing your body to build collagen and help you recover your youthful appearance.

Using a diamond tip, the outer layers of the skin are exfoliated, and this allows for the alleviation of a plethora of skin concerns. When combined with a chemical peel, you can truly treat yourself as you notice an improvement of your pigmentation.

The treatment is administered in a series of visits. Each client is unique, and we have a qualified staff waiting to consult with you. Together, we can create the most effective plan to ensure you look your best.

Effective in Wrinkle Reduction

We express our emotions with our faces, and as much as we love to smile, the fact is that these expressions cause fine lines and wrinkles over time. With diamond microdermabrasion, you can smile with confidence. Using mechanical exfoliation, our staff can greatly reduce wrinkles by eliminating the outer layers of dead skin.

This is a process, and it normally takes anywhere from three to six treatments to effectively remove dead skin. Once this skin is gone, it stimulates your body to produce brand new skin cells. Not only does this promote the repair of fine lines and wrinkles, but it also helps in preventing new ones from forming, leaving you looking and feeling rejuvenated and youthful.
