The Healing Power of a Realskin Clinic Facial

This was an idea worth sharing.

We’ve all been there at some point in our lives. Where the pressure becomes so great, we’re overwhelmed with what we ‘need’ to do. Well, that’s what happened to me when I had an emotional breakdown at the end of 2013.

“Empathy is the antidote to shame. The two most powerful words when we’re in struggle: me too.”

This talk picks up in the second half and is all-out beautiful by the end. It will make you want to dare greatly. (8.7 million views)

Listening to Shame by Brene Brown

Feeling overwhelmed comes from looking at the future and all the things we need to do. It’s running around inside your head and it’s spinning, you’re adding more and more to the list. You’re freaking out and thinking how can I possibly achieve all these things?

A simple task to help with feeling overwhelmed…

Take a piece of paper and write down all the things you ‘need’ to do and on the right side of the paper, write what is important, delete what is not important, and what can be delegated. For example, some bigger tasks at work, may need to be done by you. Grabbing milk from the shops, perhaps your husband or a friend could do this for you.

It is totally ok for us to admit we are not coping and need time out for ourselves. Being a beauty therapist, this is what I frequently witness with my clients. They arrive to the salon stressed and fatigued, overwhelmed and exhausted. By the time our clients leave they feel more connected with themselves and what’s really important in their lives. They look and feel rested, relieved to experience time for themselves, and we observe an overall slowing down of their pace.

It’s important to look after yourself

When we’re operating at a fast pace, our cortisol levels are increased which stimulates stress in the body. Stress effects our sleep, energy and the way we look and feel.

A beautiful way for you to look and feel your best, is by allowing yourself the time for a facial. The benefits of facials are vast, however, perhaps the most powerful benefit is the power of touch. Touch has shown to lower blood pressure, heart rate, and cortisol levels, stimulate the memory centre of the brain, and drive the release of a host of hormones that link to positive and uplifting emotions, as found by Tiffany Filed, the head of the Touch Research Institute at the University of Miami’s Miller School of Medicine.

Glow Guide, Part 2 – The Fascia…

Is the only thing you’ve glowe(re)d about recently is your lack of time as you juggle the work-life balance? At Realskin Clinic, we understand…

One too many snoozes and you jump out of bed and into the car, grabbing a snack as you rush to work where you have a coffee, skip lunch and completely forget to hydrate – at least not with water. You just don’t ever seem to get a chance to focus on those skin foundations – let alone anything else.

 Skin Confidence

We’re here to help.

One word – makeup.  The application of which can be a complicated business, as we all follow our own set of rules and protocol when it comes to putting our faces on. Sometimes we get so stuck in our routine, we forget to stop and reflect on it.

Do you ever wonder if you’re actually going about your makeup application correctly? Or if there is something more you could be doing to get that glow?

Glowing skin can turn heads. This flawless look is meant to appear natural, but chances are it’s the result of a cosmetics slight-of-hand. Even if your skin doesn’t glow on its own, there’s a lot you can do with makeup to achieve glowing skin.

Step 1: Create Dimension

To create a lit-from-within, glowing complexion, it’s worth investing time in perfecting the art of contouring. Start to create dimension by applying a cream concealer in one shade lighter than your skin tone.

Using short strokes and a concealer brush, place concealer in the middle of your forehead, down the centre of your nose, along your brow bones, under your eyes and at the centre of your chin. Next, use contouring makeup where you want to subtract light and create depth.

Jane Iredale Makeup Brushes

Using light strokes and a tapered contouring brush, create an arc rather than a straight line under your cheekbones.

When choosing contouring makeup, go for a bronzer, powder or liquid foundation that is one shade darker than your natural skin tone. If you go any deeper than one or two shades, you’ll begin to look muddy.

Step 2: Layer and Blend

After enhancing the dimension on your face, apply your foundation. At Realskin Clinic we offer complimentary Jane Iredale Foundation Colour Match.

Use a lighter foundation, such as a liquid or cream, with a lot of luminosity to add a glow to the skin.

To apply the foundation, move a foundation brush, in small circles. You want to make sure your makeup isn’t sitting on top of your skin. It should blend in with the natural fluids in your skin.

Step 3: Make your cheeks pop

Don’t make the mistake of trying to create a contour with blush. Instead, select a blush that is close to your natural flush and apply it on the apples of your cheeks, instead of below your cheekbones. Blend it into the apples and upward toward your temples. A bit of flush will help make your skin glow.

Step 4: Add a Hint of Shimmer (But Just a Hint!)

Shimmer highlighter creates light and bone structure. But knowing when enough is enough is important. We recommend using a cream highlighter. Whether you’re using a cream or powder highlighter, in either case, less is always more.

Apply it to the high planes of your face, which includes the middle of your forehead, down the centre of your nose and along the tops of your cheekbones.

Step 5: Set Your Glow

After all of your layering, the final touch — translucent powder — is the most important one. Using a large fluffy powder brush, swirl translucent powder over your face to set the look and get the most out of your makeup.

Glow Guide: Part One – The Foundations…

Every day starts the same – you rush to beat traffic, make that appointment, keep the lunch date you’ve had planned for ages with the friends you rarely see…

On your way you catch a glimpse of someone you recognise and you think, who is that tired looking woman with the dull complexion?

And then you realise – it’s you…

Skin Confidence

Here at Realskin Clinic we understand that there are many different factors that contribute to a glowing complexion. Diet, lifestyle, environment and regular facials all play a part. And then of course, there’s the skincare side of things, such as Realskin Clinic’s favourites Ultraceuticals, and the various treatments available at Realskin Clinic.

So how do you get that glow?

At Realskin Clinic we believe in keeping things simple but effective, with a holistic approach to skincare. Firstly, let’s consider diet, it’s important to remember that a well-balanced, varied diet is essential to your skins health. Aim to eat as many fresh foods as possible, while avoiding excessive sugar, additives and preservatives.

Also, there is no doubt that lifestyle contributes to the look of our skin and overall skin health. As we all know, the effects of too little sleep, too much sun, alcohol, and caffeine show up in our complexion relatively quickly. And as we get older the effects are more readily visible.

Sleep is the time for skin cell regeneration. Not getting adequate sleep limits the amount of cellular repair that takes place and can subsequently lead to dullness, breakouts and premature ageing.

Alcohol and caffeine both dehydrate the skin. Dehydration is one of the biggest outward causes of skin ageing. In particular the superficial lines and wrinkles that appear on the surface of the skin.

As well as drinking plenty of water to combat dehydration and the negative effects it has on skin health; it’s also vital to limit the amount of free radical damage our skin is exposed to. The sun is a major cause of such damage. The best way to counteract this is through applying a daily SPF (whether it’s sunny or not!), such as Ultraceuticals SunActive  range.

Our Approach…

The highly trained skin health therapists at Realskin Clinic are able to assess your skin type and its specific needs to establish what Ultraceuticals products and Realskin Clinic treatments you could use to help get your glow back, and keep it.

Our Realskin Clinic skin health therapists strongly believe that each individual has their own unique skin. So what works for one person may not work for another – skin is not an exact science. At Realskin Clinic we tailor our skincare recommendations to the individual using the benefit of our skin health team’s skincare expertise and dermatological experience.

Here are a few of our beauty shares-

Firstly, exfoliation in some form or another is essential for removing the dead skin cells that sit on the surface of the skin. Unless these are removed, most products applied on top will have little effect.

Try Realskin Clinics Brightening Facial for a deep cleanse to make skin noticeably brighter and more radiant. Or Diamond Microdermabrasion, for a deep exfoliation of the face, neck and décolletage. This is finished with a customised mask application to promote a healthy glow.

Vitamin A has a proven skin brightening effect. Working by normalising skin functions to correct all skin conditions, such as pigmentation, ageing and blemishes. For this we recommend, the Azyme Peel – Vitamin A combined with an antioxidant enzyme. This delivers powerful skin health results by stimulating collagen production and improving moisture levels in the skin.

Ultimately, at Realskin Clinic, we find that healthy skin usually leads to glowing skin. Once the skin is functioning well, glowing skin is definitely within your reach!

IPL Skin Rejuvenation – Everything you need to know…

Rejuvenate your skin

Getting older has its pros and cons.

With age comes wisdom and perspective. On the flip side, as each year ticks by we start to notice the visible signs of ageing.

A wrinkle here, a little sagging there, some pigmentation and unevenness everywhere. And while there’s certainly no shame in these age markers. We’d all like to hold onto our youthful glow for a little bit longer and be the best version of ourselves – wouldn’t we?

IPL Skin Rejuvenation is a non-surgical, non-invasive and relatively pain-free skin treatment. Preferred by many clients wanting to eradicate unwanted pigmentation of the skin. But how does IPL Skin Rejuvenation actually work?

Realskin Clinic IPL Skin Rejuvenation Treatments are specifically designed to target the signs of ageing and restore your skin to its youthful glow.

  • Firstly, what is IPL? IPL stands for Intense Pulsed Light.
  • How does it work? IPL is a form of heat and light therapy. Using a computer-controlled machines, we personalise each treatment for individual skin types and conditions. The skin absorbs this light and converts it into heat, which then brings new life to cellular tissues such as collagen and elastin.
  • What results can I expect? This incredible treatment will add an instant radiance and glow to your complexion and best of all, this treatment requires little to no downtime. IPL Skin Rejuvenation treatments are also relatively quick to deliver.
  • How many treatments would I need? Results vary depending on the conditions treated. IPL Skin Rejuvenation is most successful when administered in a series of visits. Here at Realskin Clinic, we recommend fortnightly sessions for four consecutive treatments to achieve ultimate results.

Is IPL Skin Rejuvenation suitable for me?

Realskin Clinic’s IPL Skin Rejuvenation treatments are the preferred solution for the targeted treatment of the following skin conditions:

  • Facial Redness
  • Rosacea
  • Pigmentation
  • Ageing with loss of firmness
  • Broken blood vessels
  • Acne and enlarged pores

Ultimately, IPL Skin Rejuvenation treatments achieve an overall radiance, healthier and more vibrant complexion – with the cooler months being the best time to engage a series of IPL treatments. This helps avoid additional sun exposure as you move through your treatment sessions.

While IPL Skin Rejuvenation can achieve fantastic results, it is not for everyone. Those with fair to medium skin type are the best candidates for this treatment. Unfortunately, IPL treatments are often not suitable for dark or deeply tanned skin.

Realskin Clinic can help you achieve real results and emerge the best version of yourself. Call 07 3268 5488 or Book Online for an initial consultation. Our highly trained therapists are happy to discuss IPL Skin Rejuvenation and the best course of action for your individual skin type and condition.

Medical Skin Needling Treatments – Top 5 Most Frequently Asked Questions

If you experience acne scarring, pigmentation or signs of ageing such as wrinkles or loss of firmness and elasticity, Medical Skin Needling facial treatments could be the solution for you. For many, the idea of Skin Needling is pretty scary (yes, there is blood). However, in the right hands you will barely feel a thing and you will be amazed by the results.

How Does Medical Skin Needling Work?

Skin Needling is a form of skin rejuvenation, which aims to stimulate the skins natural production of collagen and elastin. Using a 12-stainless steel fine needle cartridge, tiny penetrations are created on the skins surface. The body’s immune system then recognises the small ‘wounds’ and begins the repairing process. The result is smoother, plumper skin and a reduced appearance of scarring and pigmentation.

The process of self-repairing can be extremely effective when induced in the correct environment. Whilst the process itself is simple, the technique must be executed with precision to ensure a safe treatment protocol. This is definitely a treatment you want performed by a dedicated therapist who pays close attention to detail.

What Does It Involve?

Here at Realskin Clinic, our therapists are expertly trained in the technique of Medical Skin Needling. Following a deep cleanse with ultrasonic, a topical numbing agent is applied for your comfort. While you may experience mild vibrations from the device, you will not feel pain or major discomfort.

Once the skin is prepared, we then use a crosshatch technique, similar to microdermabrasion, for up to 30 minutes. The fine stainless steel needles create micro ‘wounds’ in the skin.

For the first 24-48 hours after the treatment you may experience redness and inflammation and for the succeeding 3-5 days you may encounter dryness and mild peeling.

To nurture your repairing phase post treatment, it is imperative to follow the post care protocol for Skin Needling. There are three non-negotiables; no makeup for 12 hours’, keep the skin moist and steer clear of actives (retinol, fruit acids, etc.) for 5-7 days’ post treatment.

We recommend using an Ultraceuticals Gel or Milk Cleanser ($62), Ultra B2 Serum ($89), Ultra Hydrating Lotion/Ultra Moisturiser Cream ($76), Dily Protective Moisturiser 30/50+ SPF ($74), coupled with a Jane Iredale mineral makeup.

We recommend between 4-6 treatments to achieve exceptional results.

Will Skin Needling hurt?

There are several devices on the market for Skin Needling. At Realskin Clinic, we use the latest technology from the USA, MDerma in conjunction with a topical anaesthetic to maximise your comfort. We also use a gliding serum on the skin. This allows the MDerma to move over the skin freely without dragging and at the same time feeding your skin. The tiny needles move up and down so quickly that you only feel a light vibration, it’s a similar approach to a microdermabrasion facial, it’s safe and comfortable.

What about contamination?

A brand new, sealed, MDerma tip is used with each medical Skin Needling treatment. The design of this tip also prevents any cosmeceutical or skincare product from going up into the tip, which eliminates contamination even further. Skin Needling is a medical procedure and we treat it accordingly, your safety is our number one priority.

Can Skin Needling treatments go wrong?

Skin Needling requires extensive training; our qualified therapists have been expertly trained to attain the required accreditation. We appreciate that every skin type and skin condition is different, therefore it is imperative that your Skin Needling treatment is personalised to your individual needs. Your dedicated therapist will provide an initial consultation, treatment journey plan and post treatment skincare instructions for you to achieve your desired results.

Yes, you will experience some downtime with a Medical Skin Needling treatment for a day or two. However, after a series of 4-6 treatments, you will be rewarded with a more firm, plump, glowing complexion.

To learn more about Skin Needling, check out our upcoming Skin Needling Event on Tuesday the 6th of June, 5:30-7:30pm, 68 Racecourse Road, Hamilton, Brisbane.
